When we say “Dubai,” many people imagine a scorching desert, blazing sun, skyscrapers, and sand hot to the touch.
What might surprise you? Even in regions with extreme heat and minimal average rainfall, storms and torrential rains do occur — and they can cause serious flooding. That is exactly why we currently have several inquiries for flood protection systems in Dubai, designed to withstand unexpected extreme weather events.
Why Dubai?
Extreme rainfall is not an exception
- April 2024 – Dubai and the entire United Arab Emirates experienced the heaviest rainfall ever recorded since meteorological measurements began in 1949
- The April event was described as the most intense rainfall in the past 75 years, since the start of weather monitoring
- Rainfall intensity during peak periods reached such extreme levels that sewer systems, drainage infrastructure, and natural waterways were unable to cope
- People reported that within tens of minutes, streets turned into streams, water flooded highways, parts of the airport, and critical infrastructure hubs
- The intensity of these storm events is amplified by the effects of climate change. Studies indicate that climate change contributed to rainfall being 10–40% more intense than it would have been without these effects
